Lobbying on Behalf of the Profession
Lobbying of Buyers of Design Services – Spec Work
The Association dissuades corporations, charities and governments from asking designers to do free work as a pitch for their business. We encourage members (and all designers) to contact us when clients ask them to engage in spec work. The Association communicates the disadvantages of this practice and has had success convincing companies to select designers in an ethical manner.

Graphic Design as a Strategic Business Tool
RGD Ontario promotes the value of graphic design as a strategic business tool, in part through our annual juried exhibit of members’ work, Design at Work, which documents successful designer/client collaborations producing effective corporate communication and marketing.

Clarifying the Rules for PST on Graphic Design
The Association is currently in discussions with the Ministry of Finance to seek clarification on the rules for the application of Ontario Retail Sales Tax (RST - or better known as PST) on graphic design services. RGD Ontario submitted information and documents to the Ministry in December 2006 detailing the design process for eight specialties in graphic design, delineating and suggesting where consultations end and the production of Tangible Personal Property (TPP), which is subject to PST, starts. The Ministry is reviewing the information and preparing a set of guidelines to be discussed.

Lobbying of Government – Standing Offers
Due to member feedback, the Board has recognized the need for a concerted lobby and education of government employees on the ethics of hiring graphic designers. To this end, a committee has been established to develop a strategy to address the issue.
