Provisional RGD Resume Review Night helpful to Members

A Provisional RGD Resume Review Night organized by the Provisional RGD Committee was held in Toronto on May 18th. It was a great opportunity for Provisionals to get feedback on their resumes from both peers and senior R.G.D.s. Attendee Jairo Arango said, “I found last night’s event, Resume Writing for Designers, extremely useful. I haven’t really applied for a job over the last ten years and I got pretty good feedback.”

Provisional RGD Mary-Anne Mascarenhas reports on the night’s activities.

The evening began with a presentation by Adele Wootton, Account Director from Creative Niche. Drawing from her 10 years of experience in recruiting, Adele provided tips and advice on resume writing for creative roles. She also pointed out some of the less obvious employment opportunities one should consider, such as Studio Manager, User Experience Designer, SEO/SEM Specialist and Online Community Manager. Other topics covered included how to present freelance experience on your resume and utilizing social media as a job search/networking tool.

Some of the main tips she shared with the group were:
    • when writing your resume, be clear and honest about what you
      can do
    • look at what you can contribute, then see what the employer is
      looking for
    • do an inventory of your skills, abilities and accomplishments
    • create sample case studies; discuss what problem you faced,
what action you took, and what the result was
    • always relate your objective to the employer
    • create an image of yourself that matches the company in both
the style and content of your resume
    • proofread and spell-check your resume, checking for proper
grammar; get someone else to proofread your resume too
    • stay informed and anticipate changes in the industry
    • keep up-to-date in your technical skills and knowledge
    • participate in portfolio reviews
    • grow your personal network
    • build a great personal brand

After the presentation, Provisional RGDs were able to mingle amongst each other, critique each other’s resumes, and share ideas. Four R.G.D.’s, Karen Satok, Karin Oikonen, Patrick Robinson and Carolina Söderholm also provided short resume reviews.

Overall, the evening offered a great opportunity to inform Provisionals about resumes, an essential tool in the process of getting hired that is sometimes neglected in favour of portfolios.
