RGD responds to members' concern over announcement of commercial database of logos

Recently members of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD Ontario) expressed concern over the announcement by iStockphoto that it is adding logo designs to its library of creative content available for purchase and download.

Designing a unique and effective identity for an organization is a process that involves proper briefings, research, insight and an experienced professional to interpret these findings into a workable creative solution. Removing the interaction between designer and client means a mark is unlikely to stand apart from the competition, differentiate an organization in its marketplace and be memorable to its customers. Shopping for an identity in a catalogue of pre-designed logos is like purchasing a business plan from the local stationary store. The solution can't be unique and can't be customized to meet individual needs. In addition, the use of a logo from this site may inadvertently lead to infringement of intellectual property rights.

As the Association representing professional graphic designers in Ontario, we remind design professionals who feel threatened by iStockphoto that businesses willing to choose their identity from a catalogue of pre-designed logos are not likely to be ideal clients.

Members who might be considering posting to the iStockphoto database are reminded that the Association's Rules of Professional Conduct prohibit members from creating commercial work without compensation. Your time would be much better spent seeking out paying clients or working on a pro bono account that adds value to your local community.
