2009 Student Award Winners Announced

The Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD Ontario) has announced the winners of the 2009 Student Awards. Determined by a jury of award-winning creative professionals, 12 recipients received $18,000 in cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding achievements in all areas of graphic design.

This year’s winners demonstrate the positive role design can play in every aspect of daily life, from environmentally-sustainable milk packaging, to a magazine that supports people living with HIV, to a website that documents ecolabels being used in the marketplace.

RGD Education Chair and Vice President Phil Mondor R.G.D., of Barefoot Creative in Kitchener, said, “RGD Ontario is pleased to acknowledge the inspiring work being conceived and created by Canada’s graphic design students. These future Registered Graphic Designers will play key roles in addressing the economic, cultural and social challenges facing Canada in the coming years.”

RGD Ontario’s Student Awards program brings industry professionals together with emerging designers to promote excellence and encourage the next generation of design professionals to the highest levels of creativity, innovation and conceptualization.

This year, 100 students entered from 12 of the 17 eligible programs. There were four regional awards for Excellence across media and 14 awards for Excellence in specific media, which included branding, logo design, books and editorial, multimedia, packaging and print. In addition to the $18,000 won in cash prizes, winners also receive a special certificate and have their work profiled in Applied Arts.

In the 12 years since it initiated this program, RGD Ontario has distributed $119,000 in sponsored cash prizes supported by industry leaders. Awards are given to students graduating from three and four-year graphic design programs at Ontario colleges and universities. The work from all years is archived at http://students.rgdontario.com.
