Spec Work

Download RGD Ontario's policy statement on spec work.

Most professional graphic design organizations around the world discourage their members from participating in competitions for project work.

Policy statements from other organizations:
ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associations)
From its Code of Professional Conduct: "A designer shall not undertake any work at the invitation of a client without payment of an appropriate fee."

    GAG (Graphic Artists Guild, USA)
"It is unalterably opposed to any designer being asked to work on speculation because of the inherent risks to the artist in such circumstances. Clients should not ask designers to work on a project unless a fee has been agreed upon in advance. Designers must be adequately compensated at any time they are requested to create artwork. Working on speculation places all the risks on the designer without a commitment on the client's part."
Other graphic design organization's policies:
    AIGA (USA)
AIGA believes that doing speculative work seriously compromises the quality of work that clients are entitled to and also violates a tacit, long-standing ethical standard in the communication design profession worldwide. AIGA strongly discourages the practice of requesting that design work be produced and submitted on a speculative basis in order to be considered for acceptance on a project.
